Al-Furqan Islamic International School based in The Gambia, West Africa was established in January 2015 with the aim of reviving Islam in The Gambia by teaching conventional education, Islamic education and Quranic memorisation under one roof.
Located five minutes’ walk from the Atlantic Ocean, in the serene environment of Cape Point. A family home turned into a school, whilst maintaining its warmth. One will observe straight away that being in an Islamic school does not necessarily mean that conditions have to be below par when compared to conventional schools.
At Al-Furqan, one can be assured that our institution meets the highest standards. Our classrooms have a limit of 30 students per class with a teacher in each class and assistant teachers in the Nursery and Reception classes. Classes are well lit up, equipped with ceiling fans and with fire escape doors to make them as cosy and as safe as possible. Students are supervised throughout their time in school to make sure that there are no unislamic practices. In a nutshell, in addition to the knowledge to be gained, the school has all the comforts and care of a home, so parents can leave their children in our care worry-free, knowing that their children are being well looked after.
We are one of the few schools in The Gambia that teaches both conventional and Islamic education, including Quranic memorisation. For the conventional side we offer; English Language, English Literature, Maths, Sciences, Business subjects and Gambian history and in the Islamic Education side we offer Quranic memorisation, Islamic studies and Arabic language. The target for our Quranic memorization is for all of our students to complete memorizing the Quran by Year 8. We are a recognized international school, affiliated with Cambridge University. We use the Cambridge international curriculum to make sure our students can compete with students not only in The Gambia but internationally. Students sit to the Cambridge IGCSE and A levels exams which enables them to gain admission to any college or university. For the Islamic Education; we use the Qatar Islamic Studies and Arabic Language curricula to give our students a wider scope.
Alongside striving for our students' academic excellence, attention to detail is placed on their behaviour so that after graduating from Al-Furqan, they would be role models in society. Students are constantly monitored from the moment they walk into the school to the time they leave the school premises to make sure they conduct themselves as Muslims. Their way of talking, mannerisms, table manners, truthfulness, concept of hijab and segregation etc. are gradually moulded to be in line with the teachings of Islam. At Al-Furqan, we believe that a child’s character is more important than the knowledge being impacted on him/her, hence why teachers never tire from correcting students. Alhamdulillah, since the school was opened, both parents and teachers have noticed positive changes in their children/students.
Al-Furqan was set up in order to make a difference in society. The main aim of the school is to be standard bearers in the educational sector, and hopefully, other schools will see wisdom in our methods and embrace it. We believe that if young children are provided with sound education, desirable attributes and values during their formative years they would grow up to become responsible citizens in the future insha’Allah.
